Letter from the President – September 2021

Hello to all members and the design community in Michigan –

I hope this letter finds you well and you are enjoying this fall weather that is upon us.

2021 is shaping up to be much busier than 2020!  I am glad to see so many of you at events, working on projects and even some of you in new roles! Some of us might be feeling that sense of normalcy return as is seems to be getting back to something more like what we are used to.

We at IIDA Michigan have been doing what we can to create some normalcy around connecting for events, having just held our 2021 ArtPrize Scavenger Hunt last week in Grand Rapids. It was so much fun to see all our teams, volunteers, Patrons, sponsors, and guests join in on this Signature Event. Congratulations to all our winners! Also, thank you to all of you who made the day a success through planning, volunteering, and donating to this event. Just a year ago, we weren’t sure this event would be able to happen, so it certainly was a joy to see everyone with a smile (and their running shoes)!

Another program that is in full swing is the Fall NCIDQ Study Group. We have participants who are at all levels of studying, helping each other to get ready for the big exam day. We are still holding this group virtually and this format has been well received by the groups who have been studying together for the last three sessions.

Speaking of the NCIDQ exam, CONGRATULATIONS to all the new NCIDQ certification holders as well as to those who have passed sections of the exam recently!  What an outstanding and rewarding accomplishment! And GOOD LUCK to all of those who are preparing for the exam in October!

Our chapter Advocacy efforts have been in full swing with our very own Claudia Padilla, VP of Advocacy, being highlighted in an article from IIDA HQ in August. The Advocacy team has also presented two virtual forums to help educate others on the merits of Interior Design Advocacy. Recordings of these events can be found on our YouTube channel.

Student Affairs is also teaming up with our Advocacy team to visit some campus centers over the next few weeks. Now that most schools are back to in person classes, our team is taking advantage of the opportunity to connect with our Student Members. Please check out our newsletter and website for current updates from our VPs.

We will continue hosting a mix of virtual and in person events in the coming year. Our Insight conference will be held November 15-19, with several virtual speakers and events taking place throughout the week. The MiDesign Awards Gala will also be held in person in April at the Roostertail in Detroit. A call for submissions for both Insight & the MiDesign Awards will be announced soon. We are also planning some in person CONNECT events in both city centers. Please keep an eye on our social media, website and emails that will communicate additional information about upcoming events, programs and all the amazing activities IIDA will be offering.

We are continuing to work hard on bringing the best content, opportunities, inspirational activities, and professional development to all our members. Hopefully we will continue to see all of you as the year carries on.

Finally, I want to say thank you to all our Members and Patrons! We cannot provide the events, programs, and initiatives we do without all of you! The Michigan design community is strong, and we are so happy to be a part of it with you!

I am extremely excited to see what the rest of 2021 has in store for all of us! Until we meet again, take care of yourselves and please be stay safe!

All the best,

Megan Murray
